Jane snorkels at Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is breathtaking.  From its website (at this link),

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, one of the most spectacular natural resources in Hawaii, is reaping the benefits of over a decade of moves to re-establish its pristine marine ecosystem. Recognizing the damage done by years of neglect and abuse by allowing some three million visitors annually, the City and County of Honolulu in 1990 laid out a plan to restore Hanauma to a clean, healthy state by reducing the number of visitors, establishing an education program, and instituting supportive restrictions.

The beach began as a volcanic crater that was flooded.
The ocean eroded the outer wall and it became a bay.

The sheltered bay offers superb snorkeling.

The volunteers welcomed Jane.

Jane found a baby coconut!

The Koko crater rises in the distance.

As we walked back up to the parking area,
we could see the coral reefs ...

.... that breath life into the bay!

Do you snorkel?  scuba?  surf?  One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, May 19, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, May 20.

  5. I love to snorkel. I don't do it here because the water is way cold and not clear (like Hawaii). But, if we are on vacation where we can snorkel, we always do.

  15. Love the ridge hike above Hanauma Bay. Great views and it's a good little workout. Wear sunscreen since there is no shade or cover.
