As we kick off Memorial Day Weekend, Jane visited the "Big Barracks" on Hickam Field. The barracks housed and fed over 3000 airmen in the Army Air Corps. On the Day of Infamy, they also came under attack ...
Today the building serves at the Headquarters for the Pacific Air Forces. Note the bullet holes are preserved to remember the fallen. |
The building is open to the public. The hallway offers several displays with WWII memorabilia. |
Jane is sitting next to one of the bullet holes in the interior stairwell. |
Look for the second hole above Jane. |
The courtyard is dedicated to the heroes of campaigns supported by Pacific Air Forces, including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. |
This flag from December 7, 1941 was sent on a war bond tour. It was displayed at the Air Force Academy before returning to Hawaii. |

Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii
For the past several years we've gone to a friend's house for a pool party. Good friends, good conversation, good food. My mom and I also always go to the cemetery and place flowers and an American flag on my dad's grave.
ReplyDeleteWe're not doing much this year. Maybe just bbqing.
ReplyDeleteKim, this was a very moving tribute. Very valuable to all of us, so that we don't forget the sacrifice. Kathryn
ReplyDeleteNo plans yet. Maybe we'll catch a movie.
ReplyDeleteI was able to visit when my father-in-law was stationed in Hawaii. As to the holiday, I will have my daughters over for dinner if their work schedules permit and there aren't any graduations to attend.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was Jane. She visits great places. I am resting this weekend and remembering all the veterans in my family.
