Aloha to Ka'ena Point - Mokule'ia Section

Ka'ena Point is the western tip of O'ahu.  I've blogged about it here:

- Atop the point at this link.
- From the Wai'anae Coast at this link.

On Sunday, my family hiked along the North Shore towards Ka'ena Point.  The dirt path is shared by hikers, cyclists, and fishermen in four wheel drive trucks.  The parking area for the Ka'ena Point State Park is just past Dillingham Air Field.   The airfield has served as a backdrop on Hawaii Five O.  The Mokule'ia area served as a backdrop for Lost.   Daniel Dae Kelly must know it well!

Few tourists venture this far away from Honolulu.

Local keiki (children) respect the kai (ocean) -
never turn your back on it.

I don't know how they catch anything in those waves!

On our way home, the murals at the Waialua Elementary School caught my attention.

I believe this is the undersea volcano off the Big Island.

I invite you to share a city/state/county park near you - what makes it unique?  One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs will win a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, February 25, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, February 26.

  1. We visited Bear Mountain State Park when I was a kid. I don't remember much about it except for the hiking trails.

  5. As always, beautiful pics, Kim! And the murals look great, that shark looks so real. There are no unique parks near Udine, but my fiancé's family owns a house in Trecastagni (Sicily). It's a small municipality between Catania city & Etna National Park. Etna volcano is a must visit every time we go there because.

  6. We live near the poppy preserve, filled with California's state flower. During non-drought years it looks glorious!

  7. Love the murals. My favorite park right now is the one closest to my house because they recently added a fenced in leash free dog area. I love taking my dog there.

  8. We do have a park within driving distance and a friend and I use to take walks but we haven't lately (schedules don't mesh). I love the mural. A few years back we visited with relatives in Florida who rent a condo. One of the regulars started this thing with his garage where he had friends paint fish. My daughter and her boyfriend are artists and I have a bit of talent but everyone joined it. We had a blast.

  11. I live on the Oregon coast and I'm not sure if we have anything too unique at our parks. One of my favs is a park called Gold and Silver Falls state park only about 35 minutes from our house. Two gorgeous falls in the middle of nowhere. We love to take the girls up there during the off season and picnic lunch.
