Continuing the culinary wars between Hawaii and Paris, Wednesday is my volunteer day at the chapel and school. Since I didn't have a "culinary experience", I will reprint (in part) a post from SOS Aloha - Shave Ice!
Hale'iwa on the North Shore is the home of shave ice, including Aoki's and Matsumoto's. Shave ice is a island treat enjoyed by kama'aina (residents) and malihini (visitors). You can eat it three ways:
- plain: shave ice plus flavoring
- shave ice atop of ice cream
- azuka beans atop of the shave ice
(or all three)
Back in August, my family drove up to Hale'iwa to conduct a taste test between the shave ice giants. We opted for plain as shave ice is refreshing on its own.
What flavor would you enjoy on shave ice? Would you add ice cream and azuka beans? One randomly selected commenter (from all the posts this week) will win a WHY HAWAII RIVALS PARIS gift box with some of the above goodies. This giveaway is open to all readers. Comments are open through Saturday, February 11. I'll post the winner on Sunday, February 12.

My children ordered cherry, vanilla, and sour apple. Hubby and I ordered plain with cherry and lime. After careful consideration, we all agreed that Matsamoto's flavorings were stronger in the "ice". Once both ices melted into the cups, it was negligible which tasted better. We preferred Aoki's plastic spoon to Matsamoto's wooden spoon. I preferred Aoki's shorter line but hubby said it was worth the wait at Matsamoto's.
Two families enjoy shave ice!

I'm one of those people that have a horrible time making up their mind when given too many choices. I think I would like it with the ice cream but I'm afraid I've never tasted azuka beans. Maybe cherry, vanilla and mango lol.

Not sure what azuka beans taste like, but I would probably pick rootbeer or orange.
ReplyDeleteI think I want a shaved ice. IT sounds tasty.
ReplyDeleteYes yummy, whoo would love some thanks

Azuka beans are very good, especially with shaved ice.
ReplyDeleteI tried the lilikoi and it's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteMatsumoto's all the way!! But there's one more way to eat shave ice: shave ice with flavoring and condensed milk drizzled over the top. Yummy.

Definitely add ice cream and the flavor would have to be strawberry ! ps really nice price Kim !
ReplyDeleteI would probably try pineapple, coconut, and banana or mango. No ice cream though. Don't think I've ever tasted azuka beans, so I may want to try one before putting on the shave ice.
ReplyDeleteMine would have to be green tea with azuka beans.
ReplyDeleteI think I would try the coconut shaved ice.
ReplyDeleteSo many flavors. I'd love to try the chocolate or coconut. No ice cream though. Here we call them sno-cones and I love them. So refreshing.
