A Stroll through Waikiki (part 1)

On Thursday, I stolled down Waikiki Beach ... above is a tourist seeking the perfect photo!

I am standing on the jetty near the Hale Koa - the military resort.   To the right is the iconic Diamond Head ...

... the beach is coveted by swimmers, snorkelers, surfers, and sailors, all jockeying to see Diamond Head up close!

As the beach narrowed, I walked over to Kalakaua Avenue.   The tiki above seems to be ambivalent to the tourists.

Kalakaua is home to ritzy stores ... and the International Market Place with the tackiest souvenirs.

These tiki gods don't mind the cobwebs ....

... something for Gibbs - a stuffed bull dog modeling cammo wear!

Above is the historic Moana Surfrider Hotel, a popular venue for Korean weddings ....

... with Gangham Style!

I found this mural behind the ti plants ...

... and the Father Damien and Mother Marianne Heritage Center.   Both volunteered to serve the leprocy patients in the isolated colony of Kalaupapa.   The Catholic Church canonized Father Damien in October 2009 and Mother Marianne in October 2012.    I posted pictures from Kalaupapa at this link.   How appropriate that I visited the center on November 1 - All Saints Day!    Today's comments are open forum.  One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs wins a book choice from my convention stash.   This giveaway is open to all readers. Comments are open through Saturday, November 10, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, November 11 - Veterans Day.

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

Mauka and Kilo, based on a children's story
by Fred Van Dyke to honor Hawaiian values of
respect for ohana (family) and the ocean.
This reminds me of a special friend named Mike.

  2. I have a picture of myself and my husband and another couple with those parrots. We loved doing that. Those birds are so well trained.

  7. I've learned about Waikiki before I even got the chance to know that Spain is in Europe. My idea of Waikiki when I was young was the ultimate beach destination after seeing countless of shirts with the name embossed in it.

  8. Oh, I loved the International Market Place. We bought a gorgeous table, a painting, a lazy susan and I bought a swimsuit, bikini and matching hat - that part was very touristy lol.
