Aloha to Kohala Forest Reserve - Pololu Valley Lookout

I continue to whet your appetite for the Big Island of Hawaii - home of King Kamehameha the Great.  Above is the first statue commissioned by the House of Legislature in 1878.  The statue was cast in Paris but lost in a ship wreck near the Falklands Islands.  The legislature commissioned a second statue which now stands in front of the Judiciary Building in Honolulu (as featured on the original and new Hawaii Five O).   The wrecked ship's captain later spotted the first statue in Port Stanley.  He bought it from the salvager and shipped it to Hawaii.   It was erected in Kohala - the district associated with King Kamehameha's birthplace.

In October 2011, we visited the Big Island for
Fall Break.   We ventured as far north as the
Pololu Valley for its awesome views.

The road ends here.

The view from the road ....

... the view from the trail ...

... the black sand beach emerges from the trees.

The Pololu Valley is so much more than
I could capture on my cheap camera.

Have you visited a black sand beach?  Hiked a forest reserve? One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs will win a book choice from my convention stash.   This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, March 17, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, March 18.

  1. I've been to Black sand Beach in California and I loved it. The sand is so much different that the sand on The Redondo Beach...it was so much softer I guess I could say. It really was cool.

  2. im was the volcano erupting when you were there? We drove around the Big Island to the point where the lava had covered the road. You could see it coming in the distance as the archeologists worked frantically to uncover all they could of a recently discovered heiau before the lava covered it all again. The next week on the evening news they showed the ranger station where we had stopped being burned down by the lava flow. It was sort of eerie going we were just there last week.

  6. My parents hiked to the green sand beach last year. They said that pictures cannot capture what it's like to be there in person.
I did the hike to Manoa falls in Oct. I lived it and the kids did great. I did a trail once behind the golf course on the Kaneohe/Kailua boarder. There was a nice water fall and a spectacular view of the bay.
