The Big Island of Hawaii is larger than the seven other islands combined. Driving from historical site to natural wonder takes time along the curve hugging roads. An alternate - helicopter!
Last fall, hubby and Andrew splurged on a helicopter ride from the Hilo airport.
The helo flies south ....
.... to check out Madame Pele in the Kilauea Volcano!
Lava is flowing from the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō–Kupaianaha vent along the eastern rift.
The helo also gives a great view of the waterfalls!
Heading back to the airport, the helo flies over the Hilo harbor with two cruise ships in port. Have you flown in a helicopter? I've never flown in a helicopter, but there were many times I wanted to take those helicopter tours when I was vacationing.
ReplyDeleteI have never had the chance to fly in a helicopter, I think I would be very scared even if I had the chance.
ReplyDeleteFantastic memories for your family.
The pictures are breathtaking, thanks for sharing.
I have been in helicopters twice. I took one to see the volcanoes in Hawaii and one to see the glaciers in Alaska. Both flights were amazing and remain cherished memories.
ReplyDeleteWow WoW I would so love to do that. Before DH MVA he was a small craft pilot almost twice a month weather permitting we would go for an hour in a Cessna though the views were not as majestic as these photos The experience was Amazing every-time.
ReplyDeleteHave a good one Ann/alba
Thanks for posting the pics. I can't believe how big (or rather tall) your son has grown this year! Just last year, he was shorter than you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteI've never been in a helicopter, but that would be awesome if I wasn't afraid to fly..in anything. lol As it is right now I don't fly at all. Love all the pictures you keep posting.
ReplyDeleteYes! I took the helicopter tour over Kauai. It was amazing. I still remember parts of it so vividly. One of my earliest memories was when I was 3, at the air show at Moffett Field, and getting to walk through a giant military helo. And once I got to sit in the pilot's seat--on the ground of course!--of a Coast Guard Helicopter at the San Carlos (CA) Airport CA air show.
ReplyDeletenever flown in a helicopte.. love can try it one day ;)
ReplyDeleteYes. Like Shannon, we also took a helicopter tour over Kauai. It was wonderful. It was the kind where the doors were off so you could lean over and look straight down at the scenery. Really awesome! And such beautiful scenery! The ride over the Big Island sounds great.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, What beautiful pictures. I've never flown in a helicopter, and don't intend to. I'm one of the biggest cowards going when it comes to any form of flying. I just have a terrible fear of heights, which is a shame as I've missed out on so many enoyable sights.
ReplyDeleteI never have but I would love to some day. Looks like you had a wonderful trip and I very much enjoyed all your pictures!

Beautiful photos although I know they don't do the countryside justice! Seventeen years ago, hubby and I honeymooned in Kauaii and took a helicopter ride...it was amazing!
