Aloha to Kilauea Iki - A walk across a crater

Next to the Kilueau Caldera is Kilauea Iki - a smaller crater that gushed in 1959 after a series of earthquakes.   The resulting cinder cone was named Pu'u Pua'i (gushing hill).

The flume from the Halema'uma'u-Crater can be seen in the background.

The Kilauea Iki trail descends to the crater floor for a three hour round trip hike.   Notice the three hikers in the upper middle of this picture.  The crater still emits gases so it is not recommended for those with breathing challenges.

My children opted out of the hike since it was too difficult for me.  Instead, we toured other sights around the park.   What would you have done - walk across the crater or kept to the comfort of the Jeep?   One randomly selected commenter will win a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, March 24, 10 pm in Hawaii.

  1. I definitely would have taken the jeep. I would rather take a scenic drive than a scenic hike any day.

  2. I would get out of the car and walk on the crater for a little bit and then get back in the car.

  5. I would have walked on the crater, but I know I would not want to spend 3 hours on the crater. So, probably a short walk, and then back to the jeep!

  12. I think I have somewhat of a competitive streak in me (proving to myself I can do something) and I would probably have walked the crater.

  13. Honestly? Half and half.. Some jeep ride and some hiking. Nothing quite like breathing and absorbing it all in.

  15. Definitely the jeep...my lungs are not great at the best of the times since I grew up in a smoker's household so although I can admire the beauty...I certainly would not want to breathe in the fumes!
