Aloha to the Ukulele

After a week of WWII history, let's have some holiday fun!  Last Saturday, my hcildren debuted their ukulele skills at a holiday concert.

David and Andrew played a duet of We Three Kings!   From Wikipedia (at this link),

The ukulele originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of the machete, a small guitar-like instrument related to the cavaquinho, braguinha and the rajao, taken to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants.

My kids are cute, but here are the scene stealers!  Love the Santa hat with slippahs.

Move over, Brad Pitt, here I come!   Do you have any plans for holiday performances?  One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.   Comments are open through Saturday, December 15, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, December 16 at SOS Aloha!

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

  6. The photos are great. As for us, we don't have any plans for going to any holiday performances this year, though sometimes my nieces and nephews are in them, and if they are, then we will go.

  9. Hi Kim!

I loved the pictures of David and Andrew playing the Ukulele! It took me back to my childhood and my Dad playing for my sisters and me!

He told us he had gotten it after he graduated from High School in 1932 and instead of getting a "regular" job decided to join up on a Mercant Marine ship and "see the world". While he was o the ship it seems like one of the sailors ran out of money and was geting ready to go on shore leave and offered to sell his Ukulele to my Dad which he did!

We'll he made it as far as Europe and sent his father a message via Western Union saying "Dad, I am going to Asia. He got one back from his Dad that simply said "Son - You are going to college!

He ended up doing just that and was a proud graduate of Union College in Schenectady, NY 4 years later!

When he died several years ago one of the things he left me the two things he treasured the most from his youth - a picture of him with his two best friends in their Boy Scout uniform and his ukulele!

Treasure these precious moments with your boys now! The grow up much too quickly!
