Aloha to the KRI Dewaruci - Indonesia's Tall Ship

The Press Release says it best:

The Indonesian Navy tall ship, KRI Dewaruci, is scheduled to arrive Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on February 29 for a brief port visit while enroute the U.S. mainland.  Dewaruci began her cruise from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia on January 14.

KRI Dewaruci was invited by the Chief of Naval Operations to participate in the International Operation Sail (OpSail) 2012 to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Dewaruci will join other tall ships, naval vessels and the Navy's Blue Angels holding demonstrations this spring and summer in New Orleans, Baltimore, Boston and Norfolk, Va.

The Dewaruci is the only tall mast ship of the Barquentine class owned and operated by the Indonesian Navy. She is used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet.

The Dewaruci also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the country of Indonesia to the rest of the world.

The ship's captain greeted visitors.

The crew gave us brochures from Indonesia.

The crew will sail to San Diego before joining
the commemoration events.  I wish I could be in
Panama when the ship passes through the canal!

I was amazed by the rigging!

The crew noted they will be away from home for 10 months - wow!  How long have you been away from home for work or vacation?  Have you sailed in the military or for recreation?   What do you remember from the War of 1812?   One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs will win a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, March 3, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winners on Sunday, March 4.

  1. The longest I was away for work or vacation was two weeks. My husband has been away as long as 4 months (thankfully, it's not that long any more!). I've never been sailing and remember nothing of the War of 1812.

  2. I was TDY for 42 days and really enjoyed the work. I loved hopping on a trolly and going to River Walk on weekends when not working. I spent 14 days in England and Scotland which was a blast and great vacation. I want to go back.
Thanks for the opportunity to enter giveaway.

  6. The longest I have been aware was one month. My husband only two weeks. I have sailed on a small boat that sleeps 8. It was so much fun. As tot he War of 1812, I remember the circumstances.

  7. The only lengthy time that I've been away from my family was when I went to MS with my husband when he was in the service - that was about 7 or 8 months. Twice I went on vacation without my husband and that was for a week with family when he couldn't leave work. He was gone in the service with the longest time being 9 or 10 months. Wonderful pics!

  10. How cool! I will look for this ship when it arrives in San Diego. As far as the longest time spent away from home, I guess it was a little bit over three weeks for vacations.

  11. Wow, gorgeous pics. The 1st one is amazing. In 2006 I saw the Royal Clipper near the cost of Sicily. I was very excited, but the Indonesia's Tall Ship looks even better. Love all the small details.

  12. Beautiful pictures Kim. The rigging alone looks so intricate and I loved the figurehead. The longest I've ever been away from home was when I went to visit my sister and was in Florida for 2 months. Eventually ended up living there for a few years later on.
The most horrific thing about the War of 1812 is the loss of lives ad at the end nothing changed. Such a waste. Also it was during that war the Star Spangled Banner was written.

  15. Great photos, Kim!

What I remember about the War of 1812 (based on my past as a student in Louisiana) is that the Battle of New Orleans was special in several ways:

The battle was fought 1/8/1815, a month after the Treaty of Ghent (which ended the war) was signed.

The Americans were aided by local pirates (Jean Lafitte and his bunch.)

The Uruline nuns in their New Orleans convent spent the night before the battle in prayer, asking the Virgin Mother to intercede and help the outnumbered Americans win.

The battle was fought on Chalmette Plantation, not in New Orleans.

The body of defeated British Gen. Packenham was sent home packed in a keg of rum.
